GOVgreen 2011
Continuing efforts to build collaborative partnerships between federal, state and local governments officials, and their private sector counterparts, Local 2 Global Solutions, in conjunction with the Center for Environmental Leadership and Innovation, held the second annual GOVgreen Conference and Exhibition on November 30-December 1 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC.
Thousands of federal workers, contractors, businesspeople, students, and non-profit leaders gathered to listen to educational sessions ranging from NASA's development of sustainability bases, to the inter-agency efforts of the Department of Energy and Department of Defense, to green disaster preparedness. Both participants and attendees aimed to discover the breadth of Executive Order 13514, and to explore how sustainability is reaching the federal government.
Of particular draw were the plenary sessions, which focused on corporate sustainability and climate adaptation. Wednesday's CEO plenary drew a crowd in the exhibition hall, amongst HVAC robots, electric cars, and other environmental engineering demonstrations, eager to hear about how and why companies are making sustainability a priority. With Tom Temin of Federal News Radio moderating, executives from Verizon, Hewlett-Packard, and other corporations gathered to discuss their thoughts and offer new perspectives.
Thursday's Climate Adaptation plenary intrigued the audience with recommendations and strategies for adjusting to the inevitabilities of climate change. Juliet Eilperin, environmental science reporter from the Washington Post, led the conversation with climate adaptation experts, amongst them Dr. Katharine Jacobs of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
GOVgreen will be held next year on October 31-November 1, 2012. Keep an eye out for registration information and the call for papers!
